About Neighbourhood Links
Neighbourhood Links is an innovative program based on Karl Poll’s Keyring model in the UK, for individuals with intellectual disability living independently in the community who live in close proximity to the other participants in the program. The program has a strong focus on the development of participant’s skills and capabilities especially problem solving. Participants in the program meet together on a regular basis to provide mutual support, discuss issues of interest to the group as well participate in community activities and organising a number of events themselves.
Neighbourhood Links programs currently operate in Mt Barker and Strathalbyn in regional South Australia.
Each program is supported by a trained and experienced facilitator who is familiar with the local community, has a commitment to empowerment and encourages inclusive participation in the local community.
The successes and the value of the program have been demonstrated in the strength of the freely given mutual support within the groups and the diminished dependence over time on paid service provision.
The South Australian Neighbourhood Links program are overseen by a committed and experienced Steering Committee with representatives from Disability SA, Hills Community Options and respected community members Mrs Miriam High AM, Ms Jill Marks and Ms Aileen Dawson.
